How to take measurements for your pergola

Measuring for a pergola
When measuring for a pergola, keep in mind that our structures are sized based on the outside roof dimension. Posts are typically inset 1 foot in on either side of the roof structure. However, customization is key, so adjustments may be needed to fit your specific space.
To maintain structural integrity, ensure that the overhang from the roof structure does not exceed 3 feet. For traditional pergolas with an 8-inch beam, the post-to-post span should not exceed 24 feet, or 20 feet with a 6-inch beam. Modern style pergolas have a reduced post-to-post span of 16 feet with an 8-inch beam or 14 feet with a 6-inch beam. When attaching the pergola to your structure, ensure 8-12 inches of clearance above windows/doors, depending on your ledger size.
Remember, our pergola sizes are described in Depth by Width, meaning a 14' x 20' pergola is 14 feet deep, parallel to your rafters, and 20 feet wide, parallel to your beam and purlins.
Choosing the right pergola size is key to creating a beautiful, functional outdoor space.
Follow these steps to ensure your pergola fits perfectly.
Determine Your Pergola Location
• Decide where you want to install your pergola: patio, deck, garden, or yard.
• Make sure there is enough clearance for walkways, doors, windows, or other structures.
• Consider sun exposure, shade, and potential obstacles like trees, fences, or overhangs.
Measure the Depth
• Measure from the front to the back of the area where you want the pergola.
• Again, measure at multiple points if your space isn’t perfectly rectangular.
• Ensure there’s enough room for furniture, walking paths, and any outdoor equipment.
Measure the Width
• Use a measuring tape to measure the distance from one side of your desired space to the other.
• Measure at multiple points to account for any irregularities in your space.
• The width measurement will help you choose a pergola that fits comfortably without crowding your area.
Consider Height Clearance
• Check the height of nearby structures, overhangs, or trees.
• Our pergolas are a 10’ standard height but can be customized.
• Ensure there is enough clearance for doors, windows, or rooflines, and that the pergola won’t obstruct views or airflow.
Check for Level Ground
• Measure the slope or unevenness of your area.
• Pergolas are best installed on level ground, patios, or decks.
• If the area is uneven, consider leveling the ground or using adjustable footings.
TIPS:
While measuring
- Use a sturdy tape measure for precision.
- Measure in feet and inches and double-check your numbers.
- If possible, measure from multiple angles to account for irregular spaces.
- Ask for help—two people measuring large areas is easier and more accurate.
While planning
When planning for your patio space, keep in mind that opting for a size slightly larger than your patio dimensions can enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your outdoor area. For instance, with a 14' x 14' patio, choosing a 16' x 16' Traditional Pergola Kit, or even larger, can extend the overhang of the roof beyond the patio's edge, providing better coverage from the sun. By considering this tip, you can create a more visually appealing and practical outdoor space that meets your needs for shade and comfort.
