PERGOLA INFO

What is a pergola?

Have your pergola kits been tested for wind resistance and structural integrity?

Our Ultra-Strong Pergola Kits have undergone a thorough FEA analysis conducted by an independent structural engineering firm. These tests have guided us in crafting pergolas that can endure extreme wind conditions.

So assured are we of their strength that we offer a warranty against wind damage, reaffirming our commitment to quality and longevity.

For added reassurance, we provide standard kit stamped engineered drawings and offer custom stamped engineered drawings upon request to meet varied needs efficiently.

Can MODA PERGOLAS withstand high winds and hurricanes?

At MODA PERGOLAS, we take pride in our pergola systems that have been engineered to withstand high winds and hurricanes. With our robust and durable design, many of our pergolas can be found in Florida, the Caribbean and other coastal regions prone to hurricanes and tropical storms. Catering to those in hurricane-prone areas, we recommend our hurricane clips to reinforce attachment points between rafters and beams. These hurricane clips, when correctly purchased and installed, significantly enhance the pergola's wind resistance. In fact, our engineering tests show that MODA PERGOLAS with hurricane clips anchored into wood decks can endure winds up to 115 mph, while those anchored in concrete can withstand winds up to 150 mph! Ensuring proper installation, MODA PERGOLAS can bravely weather a category 3 or 4 hurricane, providing peace of mind during extreme weather conditions.

What is the MODA PERGOLAS warranty?

At MODA PERGOLAS, our products come with a solid foundation of confidence - a Limited Lifetime Warranty that ensures your investment is protected for the long haul. Do your pergolas feature louvers?

Our pergolas feature fixed louvered ‘purlins’ designed to provide shade beneath your pergola. These angled purlins are available in options offering 50%, 75%, or 90% shade, determined by the spacing between them. Once installed, the shade level remains fixed unless the purlin holder is replaced to adjust the amount of shade created. This resilient design ensures a consistent shade experience in your outdoor space while maintaining a professional and tailored aesthetic.

Our Covered Pergolas have a solid polycarbonate roof that is affixed over your pergola's structure and does not open and close without full removal of the roof panels.

What is the standard height of your pergola posts?

Our standard pergola posts are 10 feet tall, offering a floor to beam clearance of 8 to 10 feet in a typical installation. If you require a taller structure, we can customize your pergola kit with longer posts for an additional fee, which will vary depending on the number of posts required.

Should you need to trim the posts for specific purposes like fitting them onto a landscape column or outdoor bar top, all our posts are trimmable. You can easily modify the aluminum inserts and vinyl sleeves using a miter saw with a carbide blade, eliminating the need for special ordering.

For a personalized quote on longer posts or any further information, feel free to reach out to us, and we will promptly provide the details you need.

What are the color options for your pergolas?

Our pergolas currently come in Black, White, and Sandstone.

If you're interested in adding a pop of color or refreshing the look of your pergola, you can paint it by yourself. There are specific vinyl paints available in the market that make this possible, with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint® (exterior acrylic latex) being a recommended choice for achieving a long-lasting and durable finish. It's important to note that by choosing to paint your vinyl pergola, you are sacrificing its low maintenance characteristic. To sustain the fresh appearance, plan for periodic repainting every few years to maintain the vibrancy and protect the structure from weathering.

What are hurricane clips?

Hurricane clips, comprised of aluminum L-brackets, serve as crucial reinforcements by linking each rafter to the beam.

Alongside ensuring sturdiness, these attachments provide an extra layer of protection against strong winds, granting purchasers in hurricane-prone coastal regions an added wind warranty for their pergola kits.

While primarily advised for high-risk areas, these clips can be customized as an optional feature for any pergola in any location, offering peace of mind and enhanced durability for those looking to fortify their outdoor structures.

What are beam brackets?

The pergola beam brackets offer a seamless solution for attaching beams to pergola posts without the need for pre-drilling through the beam.

This optional set of L-Shape brackets streamlines the installation process by securing the brackets to the beam first before attaching them to the aluminum post mount.

Although not obligatory, some individuals appreciate this method for its clean and unblemished appearance of the beams when utilizing beam attachment brackets, making it a favorable choice for those aiming for a polished and professional finish on their pergola installation.

What is the fan mounting kit?

The Pergola Fan Mount Kit is a versatile aluminum structural piece with a protective vinyl sleeve designed to conveniently attach between two rafters. Its primary function is to facilitate the installation of outdoor ceiling fans onto pergolas by providing a secure and practical mounting solution. The hollow aluminum design allows for the effortless passage of electrical wires through the pergola structure and the fan mount, enabling the seamless powering of fans or other electrical devices.

This kit is versatile and can be utilized for mounting various items like fans, pendant lights, TV mounts, or heaters.

Each fan mount kit comes complete with two rafter hangers for installation between the rafters, along with 3/8” x 1” hex screws for secure attachment.

Additionally, two vinyl trim rings are included to elegantly conceal the rafter hangers, ensuring a polished and professional aesthetic for your pergola setup.

What does your pergola kit include?

When you invest in our Ultra-Strong Pergola Kits, you're taking a step towards creating a beautiful outdoor space.

Setting up your pergola is easy with our all-inclusive kit. It includes screws, bolts, nuts, and a comprehensive installation guide, giving you everything required to assemble the main structure with confidence.

However, when it comes to attaching the post mount or column base to your surface or the ledger plate for attached and eyebrow pergolas, you'll need to source those specific fasteners yourself. We made this decision because we understand that surfaces can vary in material composition, and it's crucial to use the right fasteners designed for your surface type. Your satisfaction and the durability of your pergola are our top priorities, and ensuring you have the appropriate fasteners for your specific setup is key to a successful installation process..

PLANNING AND ORDERING METHOD

How do I get the right measurements for my pergola?

When measuring for your pergola, pay close attention to the dimensions of our Ultra-Strong Pergola Kits, which indicate the Depth and Width (DxW) of the pergola's roof. The roof, inclusive of beams and rafters, extends beyond the posts on a Traditional Style Pergola.

For instance, a 16' x 16' (16'D x 16'W) pergola signifies the overhead roof dimensions.

Consult the pergola CAD drawing for precise post spacing, with the typical Traditional Style Pergolas inserting posts one foot from the beam's end. In contrast, Modern Style Pergolas lack an overhang.

To maximize sun coverage with a Traditional Style Pergola, consider selecting a size larger than your patio dimensions; a 16' x 16' patio would pair well with an 18' x 18' pergola to ensure the overhang extends past the patio's edge.

Stay meticulous with your measurements to achieve the perfect fit for your pergola installation.

What’s the difference between pergola depth and width?

All of our pergolas are listed by size as Depth × Width. For example, a pergola listed as 12'×14' has a depth of 12' and a width of 14'.

These dimensions indicate the area your pergola roof will cover. (Click to see this image for reference)

  • Depth refers to the length of the rafters, which run across the beams.
  • Width refers to the length of the beams (the supports that sit directly on the posts or columns) and the purlins (the angled pieces that provide shade).

It’s important to confirm your depth and width before ordering, especially for non-square pergolas, as this affects the orientation of the purlins and how much sun is blocked. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us—we’re happy to help!

Where should I place my pergola?

The best location depends on your goals:

  • Shade & comfort: Over a deck, patio, or outdoor living area.
  • Landscape design: To define outdoor zones or enhance your yard’s layout.
  • Aesthetic appeal: To add architectural interest.
  • Functional use: For shading dining areas, kitchens, or lounge spaces.

We can review photos of your space and discuss your needs to ensure optimal placement.

What direction should my pergola face?

Pergolas provide the most shade when the sun is overhead at midday. However, you can extend the duration of shade by positioning the purlins against the direction of the sun that causes the most glare or heat.

  • Purlin orientation: For optimal shade, run your purlins parallel to the problematic sun direction.
  • Purlin tilt: Tilt the louvers away from the sun to maximize surface area facing the sunlight, which creates the best shade underneath.

In the Northern Hemisphere, South or West exposures are often the most intense, but your ideal orientation depends on your specific space and goals. Some choose to block morning sun by aligning purlins parallel to the East and tipping them toward the West.

If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your space and let us know the sun direction—we’ll help you determine the best orientation for your pergola.

Will my pergola need a building permit?

This depends on your local building codes and regulations. In many cases, attached pergolas require a permit, while free-standing pergolas are less likely to—but always confirm with your local building inspection office before installation.

Our pergolas include engineered drawings and CAD files that can be provided to you, your builder, or contractor. These drawings are typically approved without issue. For custom projects or special requirements, we can also provide an engineered wet stamp signed and sealed document.

In general:

  • Residential pergolas under 150 sq. ft. often do not require a permit.
  • Commercial pergolas almost always require a permit and full engineering calculations.

To be safe, check with your local building inspector office before starting your project.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

How often do I need to clean my pergola?

Most pergolas only need cleaning as needed. Rain may splash dirt on the posts, or dust can collect around the purlins and roof area—usually a quick spray with a hose is enough. Some homeowners also add a power wash once or twice a year as part of their seasonal outdoor cleaning routine.

Can I use a power washer on my pergola?

Yes! Power washing is a great way to clean your pergola and reach tricky spots around the purlin holders and purlins.

Just be mindful of the pressure—commercial-grade washers can be strong enough to damage vinyl. Start with a low-pressure setting at a distance, and only increase if needed. In many cases, even a regular garden hose with a good spray nozzle does the job beautifully.
